CHAPTER SIX

FRANKIE FROWNED AT the computer screen in front of her as she entered patients’ notes, and for the third time that morning pressed the wrong key, sending all the information into some inner file and causing the machine to inform her that she’d performed an illegal action.

‘Damn. Not again!’

She leant back in her chair for a second and rubbed her eyes in exasperation, then opened them and gazed in front of her, not seeing the screen but imagining two blue eyes looking into hers intently and a pair of hands moving over her body expertly so that her stomach felt as if a thousand little butterflies were fluttering around in it.

‘Oh, God,’ she groaned to herself. ‘What am I like?’

No matter what she was doing, that picture kept returning, and she was filled with a mixture of guilt and regret that once again her friendship with Jack had been compromised—this time by her. A few weeks ago her engagement to Damian had shattered into a million pieces—and what had she done? Like a fool, she’d immediately leapt into bed with Jack, at least figuratively, inevitably changing the dynamics of their relationship. In fact, she reflected wryly, she’d seen very little of Jack since that day. Was he regretting it, too? She wouldn’t blame him—and it was all her fault. She had set the pace and now he was probably as embarrassed as she was to be working in the same place. She sighed as she fruitlessly hit more keys on the computer, this time bringing up the words, ‘Do you want to rename this file?’

‘No, I don’t,’ she growled irritably.

She swivelled round in her chair and stared down the corridor. All this thinking about Jack was completely wrong. Hadn’t she told the man that she wasn’t interested in any long-term relationship? She ought to be glad he hadn’t contacted her since they’d made love that extraordinary morning—he was only doing what she’d told him to do. She’d been betrayed once very publicly and she should have learnt from that experience that flinging oneself into an affair, like she’d had with Damian, was a recipe for disaster.

Corey slapped some files on the desktop and Frankie jumped out of her reverie. ‘Sorry, Frankie, you’re wanted in the plaster room of the children’s area. A little boy with a broken arm.’

‘No problem, Corey. Want to come and do the plaster for me?’

‘Sure.’ Corey flicked a glance at her friend. ‘You OK?’

Frankie smiled to herself. Everyone had been treating her as if she’d been fragile glass when they’d learned about Damian, but there was really little need, she thought almost guiltily. She couldn’t confess that almost all her waking thoughts were about another man entirely and she hadn’t felt so alive for months!

The plaster room was a bright place with a mural of cartoon characters round the walls, all of whom had bandages or casts on, some waving crutches, others taking medicine. The staff had given their own time to paint it and it was a marvellous distraction for frightened children to look at.
